Why this question matters and how you can shape the answer Beyond Eureka! 2013 conference explored the role of science in our society today by highlighting some of the key issues and trends shaping the way that science is carried out and what this means for the future.

Professor of Microbiology & Immunology

Arturo Casadevall, MD, PhD, Professor of Microbiology & Immunology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine offered a historical perspective on modern science and its contributions to health and prosperity, as well as the how public views of science and scientists have evolved. He spoke about current external threats to science (such as the lack of science literacy) and internal threats brought about by how research is conducted,  rewarded and funded. Founder of SciStarter.com

Darlene Cavalier, MS, Founder of SciStarter.com, a popular online citizen science community, focused on citizen involvement in the conduct of science, promoting science literacy, and initiatives such as SciStarter.com and Science Cheerleaders. Ms. Cavalier also talked about challenges and opportunities to providing objective and authoritative analysis of complex scientific and technical issues to the public and to elected officials.

Guy Fish, MD, MBA, Vice President at Fletcher Spaght, has over 25 years of healthcare, life sciences and biotechnology experience. He is a member of the FS Ventures Investment Committee and sits on the Board of Directors of Phase Biosciences and Metabolon. Dr. Fish is a trustee of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a board certified internist. He received his MD and MBA degrees from Yale University.
