Nursing homes and assisted living facilities are not exempt from the changing financial models that are affecting our health care system today. Jennifer Gaudet-Hefele is studying how different types of payers may impact the quality of care provided for the residents in these settings. Specifically, do nursing homes that evolve to have more Medicare residents with shorter-term stays – often recovering from surgery or other acute illness or injury – change the quality equation for the residents who are likely to stay much longer? Using grant funding from the Another Look program, Dr. Gaudet-Hefele will try to answer this question, among others, and then work with nursing home leaders to understand how the results can be used to improve care for all.
