Understanding and Preventing Harmful Interactions Between Residents with Dementia by Eilon Caspi, PhD

The Donaghue Foundation values and appreciates the contributions of all our review committees and their respective members.

We would like to acknowledge and congratulate our colleague and Another Look reviewer, Eilon Caspi, PhD., for the publishing of his book “Understanding and Preventing Harmful Interactions Between Residents with Dementia.”

Abstract: The phenomenon of resident-to-resident incidents in long-term care homes is prevalent and harmful. However, it remains understudied and often inadequately addressed. The book is the first to focus exclusively on this phenomenon in the context of residents with dementia. It provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the risk factors, causes, and situational triggers of these incidents as well as a series of protective factors and psychosocial strategies direct care staff can use to prevent and de-escalate them. It is filled with findings from research studies, experts’ opinions, and real-life stories illustrating what works and doesn’t in efforts to address these episodes. An online companion includes screening and assessment instruments essential for individualized care planning and prevention. Implementing the principles and strategies described in the book could enable elders with dementia to realize their right to live in safe care homes.
